Gudimallam

Uncover the Ancient Splendor of Gudimallam’s Parasurameswara Temple

Tucked away in the verdant hills of southern Andhra Pradesh, Gudimallam is best known for the Parasurameswara Temple—home to one of India’s oldest and most unique Shiva lingas, carved as a three-dimensional figure dating back to the 3rd century BCE. This rare “anthropomorphic linga” reflects early South Indian artistry and Vedic ritual traditions.

The temple complex, surrounded by coconut groves and rice paddies, exudes a serene, timeless atmosphere. Intricate bas-reliefs on the stone walls depict mythological scenes, while the sanctum’s finely chiseled sculpture of Lord Shiva with axe in hand is revered as a masterpiece of ancient iconography.

Beyond its archaeological significance, Gudimallam hosts vibrant festivals—especially Maha Shivaratri—when devotees flock here for night-long prayers, oil lamps gleaming across the courtyard, and traditional music invoking the temple’s storied past.
