Nestled on the banks of the Penna River in Kadapa district, Vontimitta’s Kodandarama Swamy Temple is a jewel of South Indian heritage. Revered for its perfect proportions and exquisite carvings, it has welcomed pilgrims since the 16th century.
Historical Background
Built under the Vijayanagara Empire by Timma Bhupala in 1513 CE, this temple honors Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. Legend says Rama rested here after defeating Ravana, and the twin ponds (“Vonti Mitta”) gave the village its name.
Architectural Highlights
A fine example of Dravidian architecture, the temple features a three-tiered gopuram adorned with sculpted scenes from the Ramayana. Inside, the mandapams rest on stone pillars carved with deities and mythical creatures, all leading to a gold-plated sanctum sanctorum.
